  • Although winter in Alaska can be extraordinarily beautiful, it's summertime that offers the most for visitors. You can experience our state's warmest weather and longest days, choose from the widest selection of transportation and day tours, and enjoy better access to Alaska's wild landscapes. Each of the summer months, which run roughly from mid-May through mid-September, offers something unique.

GOOD TO KNOW:

  • One of the best ways to see Alaska is by cruise and there are a couple of different ways to see this land. The variations include the type of ship and whether you want to tour the Inside Passage or the Gulf of Alaska.

  • Currency is the US dollar.

  • Binoculars, cameras, insect repellent and clothing you can layer are a must for Alaska

  • Alaska has mostly glacial fed tap water so feel free to bring a reusable water bottle and fill ‘er up!

  • To enter the US and Hawaii, you need a valid passport.

  • Hawaii is a US State and therefore uses US Dollars.  Credit cards are widely accepted although some food trucks or small shops off the beaten path may only take cash.

  • Hawaii has two official languages; Hawaiian & English

  • The term “Hawaiian” is only used to refer to people of Hawaiian descent. All others who were born on the islands are generally referred to as “locals.”

  • You may notice signs by the beach or other parks that say kapu. This means it’s a sacred site — perhaps an ancient burial ground or meeting place for royalty. When you see these signs, be respectful and don’t tread on the ground, take souvenirs, or leave any garbage.

  • Avoid swimming in enclosed natural pools as those are often heavily contaminated by bacteria

  • The Amazon Rainforest is a year-round destination although January to June is wet season.  The rains result in higher rivers which mean better accessibility but also more mosquitos and cooler temperatures.  Dry season has lower river levels that can impact navigation.  It still rains regularly although less than wet season.

  • The most popular countries to visit the rainforest are Peru, Ecuador & Brazil.

  • The Amazon Rainforest biome is shared between Brazil, Bolivia, Columbia, Peru, Ecuador, Venezuela, Guyana, Surinam and French Guyana.  Travel document requirements will vary depending on which country or countries you intend to visit.

  • Currency will vary with the country visited.

  • The Amazon is home to an estimated 400-500 different groups of indigenous people of which approximately 50 of these tribes have never had contact with the outside world.

  • Binoculars, cameras and mosquito spray are absolute musts for the Amazon

  • Keep a respectful distance from any local wildlife ~ some are poisonous!

  • Use a refillable water bottle and use a “take-in / take-out” attitude with your trash

GOOD TO KNOW

  • To enter Germany, you need a passport that is valid for at least four months from your date of arrival. For citizens of EU countries, a valid identity card is sufficient.

  • Germany operates using Euros.  No other currency is widely accepted.

  • Smoking is banned in public places but drinking alcohol is still legal

  • To get ONE beer in Germany, you show your thumb.  To show your first finger means that you want 2 beers: one with the thumb, and one with the finger.

  • In Germany cash is king. Most stalls, stores, shops, bars and restaurants have no card machine. Credit cards are not as widely accepted as in other countries.

  • No Sunday shopping in Germany.   Museum, Cafés, Bars & Restaurants remain open.

  • Although German is the main language, many Germans speak good English.

  • To enter Greece, you need a passport that is valid for at least three months beyond your date of departure.

  • Greece uses Euros.  The businesses in main tourist areas usually accept credit cards but many restaurants do not.  Make sure you always have some cash.

  • Greek is the official language of Greece & the Greek Islands.

  • Almost 50% of the Greek population smokes, so it will be impossible to avoid it!

  • Don’t wave at anyone in the Greek Islands!  Extending all your fingers and directing your palm at someone in a forward motion is called the mountza and is believed to be derived from an ancient curse, so don’t do it!
